Introduces concepts relating to shame in American culture. Brings together viewpoints and ethical perspectives from disciplines including psychology, sociology, education and the law to discuss shame and its impact on individuals, families and communities. Links topics to behavioral principles, grounding them in a fundamental framework of the science of behavior.

Objectives:

  • Define shame and introduce vantage points from which shame arises in our society.
  • Describe how shame has been presented by individuals and institutions as a morally justified punishment intended to influence desired behavioral outcomes.
  • Describe behavioral science principles that explain why one person shames another and predict how coercive strategies such as shame affect the behavior of the person shamed.
  • Describe the intended and unintended consequences of shame on individuals and the broader community.
  • Describe known environmental conditions that can be predictive of shame.
  • Evaluate shame as it relates to cultural values, individual morality and the BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts.
